What to do in Malaga at Christmas?
Your market visit should be combined with the other spectacular festive attractions to make a full day of it. Here are the highlights –
You cannot miss the famous Calle Larios Christmas Light & Sound Show. The main shopping street, Calle Larios, is the epicenter of the season. Every evening from late November until early January, the spectacular light display dances in sync with festive music. The shows usually run three times nightly at approximately 18:30, 20:00, and 22:00.
Another wonderful place to see the lights, without the huge crowds is the La Concepción Historical-Botanical Garden. It hosts a separate, large-scale, ticketed light installation event running throughout December, offering a beautiful illuminated trail. This year the theme is Alice in Wonderland and tickets cost €15.50 for adults and €11.50 for children.
We’d also recommend that you follow the Route of Nativity Scenes (Ruta de Belenes), which is a great way to explore the city. Following the Spanish tradition, many churches, organizations, and the City Hall set up elaborate, often monumental, Nativity scenes. Visiting the Belén at the Town Hall and Malaga Cathedral is a must, but there are many more to discover and a trip to the tourist office will help you discover the best.
The Spanish Christmas climax occurs on January 5th with the Three Kings Parade and although they take place everywhere, Malaga is the biggest and best! This massive, colorful parade features Melchior, Gaspar, and Balthazar (The Three Wise Men) riding through the city center, throwing millions of sweets to the crowds, marking the grand finale of the holiday season.
Where to stay?
A Christmas holiday on the Costa del Sol which combines the stunning Christmas markets in Marbella and Puerto Banus, with the fabulous activities in Malaga, is a great idea. For maximum Christmas magic, we’d recommend a holiday rental in Marbella Old Town. It’s under an hour drive from Malaga and it’s a doddle with a private transfer to whisk you there and back!
If you’d rather be closer to Malaga, but out of the hustle and bustle of the city, a holiday rental in Benalmadena is a great choice. It’s a 30-minute drive to Malaga City and even better, it’s on the train line which connects you to Malaga City and Fuengirola, so you don’t need a car. There’s a great Christmas program in Benalmadena too, with a Christmas market, an ice-skating rink, Santa’s Grotto, live music and much more.
