Marbella is paradise for sports lovers with amazing facilities, so it’s no wonder that it also hosts many excellent sporting events each year. It’s tricky to list them, as they change regularly, but below are some highlights and useful website links, so you can find the latest information and dates.
Golf tournaments
With over 70 golf courses in a very small area, this area is known as the Costa del Golf. With such a density of great courses, there’s no surprise that you can find regular golf tournaments throughout the year. In 2017 some of the world’s best golfers came to the area as part of the Valderrama Andalucia Masters and there is always something going on that you can either take part in or watch. For the latest calendar of golf events and what’s going on at golf courses along the coast check out the golf section of Visit Costa del Sol.
Polo competitions
Sotogrande is a mecca for polo with a number of stunning polo clubs including Santa Maria Polo Club. Every year these clubs host excellent international polo tournaments and you can go and watch a match and enjoy the refined surroundings. Check out the Santa Maria Polo Club for more information. Sotogrande is within ten minutes of our selection of Estepona vacation rentals or an easy 30-minute drive from Marbella.
Sailing and Watersports
The Costa del Sol has miles and miles of wonderful coastline and excellent marinas in Malaga, Benalmadena, Fuengirola, Marbella, Puerto Banus, Estepona and Sotogrande. There usually are regattas and events for different classes of boats. Each year there is a Semana Nautica (Nautical Week) in May where there are jet-ski races, sailing, paddle surfing and fishing events which visitors can enjoy. In 2017 Marbella held the First Intercontinental Cup between Marbella & Ceuta and many more great events through the year. Sotogrande has the prestigious international event RC44 Sotogrande Cup and regular events for catamarans and small boats. If you are interested in sailing, contact the marina closest to your holiday rental and ask if there’s anything going on during your stay, as they are not always easy to find out about. Here are the websites for the Real Club Marítimo de Marbella and the Real Club Marítimo Sotogrande for more information.
Tennis
Some of the best players of all time come to Marbella each September for the Senior Masters Cup. Past players include the legends John McEnroe, Pat Cash and Carlos Moya. The three-day event is held at the Puente Romano Tennis Club on the Golden Mile with these amazing players competing to delight the crowds. (Find out more)
We recommend choosing a vacation rental on the Golden Mile if you want to be close to the Puente Romano for the Masters.
